Definition of Case Study

As there is no one universal solution to a universal problem, so is there no universal definition to case study. This is because a case study is real-life based, and sequel to the complexity of nature, life, business, human being, time and weather differences, that real life situations present, it might be practically impossible to coin a singular definition for such a non-uniform real-life based subject like case study.  However, different authors had made efforts as given below

Leenders et al, defined case study as a “description of an actual situation, commonly involving a decision, a challenge, an opportunity, a problem or an issue faced by a person, or persons or an organizations”. Becker et al (1994 – 2012), case study refers “to the collection and presentation of detailed information about a particular participant or small group, frequently including the accounts of subjects themselves. A form of qualitative descriptive research, the case study looks intensely at an individual or small participant pool, drawing conclusions only about that participant or group and only in that specific context”.

I will also like to add my own piece to this discussion – Case Study is the course of study that enables its students understand, demystify and relate with the complexity of business real life situations, either financial or non-financial or both. One could also say that Case Study is a report writing exam that tests students’ ability to constructively analyze, appraise and report the given business real-life scenarios using the acceptable financial and non-financial tools.

Case Study is the course of study that enables its students understand, demystify and relate with the complexity of business real life situations, either financial or non-financial or both.

Case Materials in Report Writing:

Case materials are the resources made available to the writer from which the report is being drafted, analyzed, reviewed, concluded and reported. Case materials are usually extracted from both internally, externally, industrially and globally. Case materials are of diverse natures, but in this edition, we shall be discussing more of conventional case materials which usually come through exhibits. Examples of exhibits are:

  • Your client’s management accounts or financial reports either audited or not edited (external)
  • About you (internal)
  • Mail from your boss (internal)
  • Communications from your client – resolutions and  communiqué of meetings (external)
  • Background of your client’s company (external)
  • Your company’s project proposals (internal)
  • Your clients project proposals (external)
  • The government’s take or position on the subject matter (external)
  • The industrial view on the topic under consideration (external)
  • Global reports on the subject matter (wider context)
